7th Grade
Career DevelopmentIn 7th grade the counselors meet with students for 2 days of career exploration through Language Arts classes. The focus of the experience is to build self-knowledge, personalized plans and career awareness. Students take simple interest and learning inventories. Counselors work with students through the XELLO program to make connections between their interests, their personality, possible career clusters and plans for their future. S.o.S Middle School ProgramThe adolescent years are marked by a roller-coaster ride of emotions – difficult for youths, their parents, and educators. It is easy to misread depression as normal adolescent turmoil; however, depression appears to be occurring at a much earlier age. Depression – which is treatable – is a leading risk factor for suicide.
To proactively address these issues, Rochester Community Schools is offering depression awareness and suicide prevention training through the SOS Middle School Program. The lessons are taught by school counselors through 7th grade Health classes. This program has been developed by the highly regarded non-profit organization that created the SOS Signs of Suicide Program for Middle Schools, used by thousands of schools nationwide since 2000. It has proven successful in encouraging the student to seek help either for themselves or a friend. It is the only school-based suicide prevention program to show a reduction in suicide attempts in a randomized, controlled study (American Journal of Public Health, March 2004). |
